Nightfall Slot Review, Demo Play, Payout, Free Spins & Bonuses

Nightfall is a medium/high volatility gothic mystery slot from Push Gaming, and it plays out on 5x3 reels with 20 paylines. Top-reel Slab Prizes up to 5,000x are won by Fireball symbols literally cracking the stone tiles, and Fireballs can come with prize-boosting multipliers. Only Fireballs (and extra spin scatters) land in the bonus round, where the Instant Prize Slabs don’t change between spins. You can win up to 20,000x your stake, and our full review is available below the free demo game.

Nightfall Review

Push Gaming has a thing for installments that can deliver sudden and massive payouts out of the blue, but this kind of setup usually requires a bit of patience from the player. This is definitely the case with Nightfall, which comes with a 5x3 stone tile grid set against a nocturnal gothic city backdrop. On top of this grid you’ll find the Instant Prize Slabs reel, and it comes with prizes between 2x and 5,000x that shift randomly per base game spin.

These prizes can only be won by landing 3 Fireball and/or Multiplier Fireball symbols on the same reel within a single cascading sequence, and you don’t land a slab prize very often in the base game. Dead spins abound on the regular reels as well, but high value top-tier symbols can come to the rescue in lucky sessions. The bonus round is all Fireball and Slab Prize cracking action, and the overall 20,000x potential comes with a decent 1 in 8,795,075 probability.

Nightfall Slot Features

The 3 mid-level tiles pay 50x, 75x and 100x your stake for 5-oak wins, while the top-tier Medusa-like symbol pays 1,000x your stake for the same. The Fire Orb symbol serves double duty as both the game’s Wild and Scatter, and it will thus step in for any regular pay symbol to help complete winning combos. Winning symbols are removed via the Cascading mechanic, making room for new symbols to drop down to fill the gaps.

This goes on as long as you keep winning.

The Instant Prize Slab is situated on top of the regular grid, and it comes with prize tiles worth between 2x and 5,000x your stake. You need special Fireball symbols to land on the regular reels to win these prizes, and both the prize slab sizes and prizes vary per base game spin (a single prize slab can cover 1 to all 5 reels in length, affecting the probability of cracking it).

The Fireball symbols will attempt to break the prize slab above the reel where they appear, and 3 fireball hits within the same cascading sequence is what it takes to win the prize. The slab is then removed and replaced by a new random prize slab. The good news is that Fireball symbols tend to come in stacks. This means that even if only one is visible on the top row, 2 more may cascade down to get the job done.

In addition to the regular Fireball symbols, you can also land Fireball Multiplier symbols, and these come with multiplier values between x2 and x50.

The multiplier will move up to boost the slab prize above the relevant reel, and then it hits the slab like a regular Fireball would.

You need to collect 3 Fire Orb scatters in the meter in the same cascading sequence to trigger the Bonus Round, and 3, 4 or 5 scatters lands you a 5x, 50x or 1,000x payout up front, respectively. You get a minimum of 6 free spins, and +1 extra spin is added on top of that for each triggering scatter above the minimum of 3. There are no regular pay symbols in play during the feature, so only blanks, Fireballs, Multiplier Fireballs and Scatter symbols may land.

The Instant Prize Slabs do not change per spin, like they do in the base game, which makes it easier to eventually win the prizes. It also means that prizes can be boosted by up to 3 separate spin multiplier fireballs before being won. Scatter symbols are collected in the orb meter on the left-hand side, and you get +2 extra spins per 3 scatters you collect to fill the meter.

Finally, non-UK players, and anyone living in an eligible jurisdiction, may purchase the bonus round for 113.5x the total stake. Taking advantage of the Bonus Buy option (via the Star icon above the spin button), gives you an RTP of 96.17 % (which is a bit lower than the top-tier regular RTP).

The 200 Spins Nightfall Slot Experience

You get to see at least one decent base game win early on, between plenty of dead spins, before we finally trigger the bonus round at 2:11 into the 3:34-minute highlights video. Our initial slab prize draw wasn’t all that exciting to be honest, but we managed to crack a few slabs, including a multiplier boosted one. Check it all out for yourself by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

The dark/gray color scheme is a tad too monotonous for our taste, and night seems to have already fallen as you start.

A backdrop of the gothic Londonesque city bathed in a blood red sunset would have made for a better contrast perhaps, but these are minor details. The pace - including the cascading wins mechanic which can often slow things down - is excellent with the turbo switched on, and overall Nightfall offers smooth-running and satisfying gameplay all the way.

That being said, you’ll need to brace yourself for plenty of dead spins, and the base game is mostly a sinking ship grind. Sudden spikes can come out of nowhere though, which is the case in many Push Gaming releases lately, but it gets a bit tiresome chasing what usually amounts to hard-to-get smaller slab prizes. This tends to change when the bonus round finally hits though, but a lot depends on your initial slab prize draw. Patience may be rewarded, but Nightfall will hardly appeal to casual punters looking for plenty of action.

Pros

  • Slab Prizes won via Fireballs and multiplier Fireballs
  • FS w/ sticky slab prizes and no regular pay symbols
  • 113.5x Bonus Buy option (not available in the UK)
  • The 5,000x top Slab Prize probability is 1 in 608,532
  • Win up to 20,000x (probability is 1 in 8,795,075)

Cons

  • Beware of adjustable RTP ranges
  • Too volatile for casual gamers
