Age of the Gods Norse Gods and Giants Review
There is a real danger that Playtech Origins will soon run out of gods to feature, as pretty much everything the western pantheon has to offer has now been portrayed in this series. This time giants have been included in the mix, and perhaps they will throw in some regular trolls next time. Either way, Age of the Gods Norse Gods and Giants is the latest title to combat the legendary status of the original game that started it all, but we hardly think this distant cousin has any real claim to the throne.
The visuals are nicely done as usual, and the giant 3x3 symbols look good whenever you actually get to see them in full display on the reels (which is not all that often). The reels are set against a harsh snow-filled landscape, and the rugged mountains of nordic countries are as unforgiving in winter season as the game itself. Highly volatile for sure, but offering only a max win of 1,000x your stake outside of the 3 progressive jackpots, this game’s math model doesn’t really make much sense.
The 2 base game features can be helpful at times, but they don’t really trigger all that often. When you do get them, it will many times fizzle out into nothing. That being said, we did have some decent wins in our 200 spins test session you can read all about further down in the review.
The bonus round is the big attraction here, as it comes with only higher value symbols, giant symbols on the 3 middle reels and stacks of symbols on reels 1 and 5. This combination can be lucrative for sure, but you need the Ultimate Jackpot to really win big in this game.Similar Slots:
What are the bonus features?
Age of the Gods Norse Gods and Giants comes with a complete bonus feature kit, so to speak. You’ll benefit from 2 randomly triggered base game features, as well as a free spins bonus round and the possibility of winning 3 different progressive jackpots. We’ll start with the base game features first, and move on to the more lucrative stuff right after.
The Giant Respin feature comes into play whenever you land a fully visible 3x3 giant symbol on reels 2, 3 and 4 (i.e. the 3 middle reels).
The feature will only trigger if the giant symbol does not connect in a winning combo, and any identical symbol that lands on reel 5 will become frozen in place together with the giant symbol in the middle. The 3x3 symbol can move to the right or left one nudge, but it can also remain in the middle. The remaining reel positions will then spin again, and if you land at least one new matching symbol on reels 1 or 5 it will lock in place too, and you will get a new respin. Only empty symbols or matching symbols will be on the reels per respin. This feature goes on until you don’t land more matching symbols, or you fill the entire screen with nothing but matching symbols. If the latter occurs, you can expect a win between 25x and 1,000x (depending on which symbol you’re dealing with)
You can also benefit from a Power Nudge feature that comes into play when you land a full stack of identical symbols on the first reel, while at the same time landing a matching 3x3 giant symbol partly visible on the 3 middle reels. The giant symbol will then nudge into place, so it fills the 3 middle reels completely. This will naturally give you a bigger payout, and can lead to a full screen of matching symbols with a bit of luck.
The Age of the Gods series is famous for their progressive jackpots, and Gods and Giants slot is no exception. A jackpot win will be triggered at random times, which adds an extra layer of excitement to the gameplay.
Whenever the Jackpot feature is triggered, you will always win 1 of the 3 possible jackpot, and they are as follows:- Daily Jackpot - will be won daily within a given timeframe
- Instant Jackpot - will be won before it reaches a given amount
- Ultimate Jackpot - “unlimited” progressive jackpot that seeds at £100,000
The biggest Ultimate Jackpot ever won across the network is £1,106,943, and the biggest jackpot will usually be won every 6 weeks, or so. The average jackpot size is well above £500,000, which is a solid max payout for sure, but it cannot really be compared to the mega jackpots you’ll find on more dedicated jackpot slots.
Free spins in Age of the Gods Norse Gods and GiantsWhen you land a fully visible 3x3 mega scatter symbol on the 3 middle reels, you trigger the free spins bonus round. The scatter symbol is the game logo, and you can also get help from the Power Nudge feature to make this happen. You can retrigger the free spins feature with no upper limit, and this is done the same way you triggered it in the first place.
Either way, you will start out with 8 free spins, and you will now land nothing but giant 3x3 symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4. In addition, all symbols that land on reels 1 and 5 are now stacked, which means that triggering the Power Nudge and the Giant Respins feature is much more likely during the bonus round. To top it off, you will only land premium symbols during the free spins feature, which guarantees more significant wins.
How to play
The game interface is quite simple and easy to overview in this game, but we’ll still walk you through the essentials here.
Knowing how to play Age of the Gods Norse Gods and Giants slot is mostly important for new players though. If you have plenty of experience with online slots you can probably skip this part, or skim through it at best. You can start by clicking the “i” icon down in the left-hand side corner, as this takes you into the paytable. Here you can get a nice overview of all the symbol values, and you should keep in mind that this is a static paytable that does not update according to your chosen bet level. You need to divide each symbol value by 50 (the number of fixed paylines) to see how much each combination pays per total stake.
Game workflowIf you scroll down in the paytable, you can read all about the different bonus features. There are some nice illustrations there to further your understanding, and you can also see an overview of all the paylines. The + and - symbols will adjust your bet level in the range of 20p to £300 per spin, which should make this game suitable for most player types.
The purple “turbo on” icon will turn on the fast play option, something we always go with whenever possible as we enjoy high paced gameplay. Hovering the mouse over the autoplay icon pulls up a autospin range between 5 and 100, or you can simply allow the game to spin for you until a bonus feature is triggered.
Spinning the reels manually is also a possibility, of course, and you can stop each spin short to save time.Where to play Age of the Gods Norse Gods and Giants?

The 200 Spins Age of the Gods Norse Gods and Giants Experience
The time has finally come to put this game to the ultimate 200 spins test, and we were eager as always to get started with the spinning. The Gods and Giants slot offers an interesting mix of features, and the giant symbols are visually pleasing when they land in full view. We loaded up the autoplay feature with our first 100 spins, and soon noticed something rather annoying.
The pace is okay as long as you don’t win, but every single win (big or small) is followed by the longest pause we’ve ever seen in a game. You’ll have to endure the game highlighting the payline you won 0.2x at like 8 times, and the whole nightmare lasts for 5 to 6 endless seconds. You have to click the spin button to short it down, which defeats the whole purpose of the autoplay feature, and the whole thing is just incredibly bad for the flow and enjoyability of the game.
WinAnyway, we started out with plenty of dead spins and smaller wins, just as we expected from a highly volatile Playtech game. Suddenly the beast symbol landed as a 3x3 giant symbol in the middle, and the Respins feature was triggered. We actually managed to fill the entire screen with this symbol, and got ourselves a decent payout of 50x our stake.
Our session continued with smaller wins and dead spins, until we finally triggered the bonus round. It took us around 120 spins for this to happen, and a 3x3 giant wild in the middle gave us a solid payout right away. We triggered the Respins feature 2 times within the bonus round, but it didn’t really amount to all that much here. In the end we got away with a total win of 101.9x our stake, but we were still a bit in the red from the totality of our 200 spins session.
Review Summary
Age of the Gods Norse Gods and Giants is a decent addition to the series, but not really all that memorable. The 1,000 max win potential is a bit weak for this kind of volatility, but you can always hope for the Ultimate Jackpot.
The base game features can be somewhat helpful, but you really need the bonus round to rack up some serious payouts in this game.We guess the million dollar question is: Why waste your time and hard-earned money on Gods and Giants when the first Age of the Gods game offers a far better math model and better bonus features to boot. In fact, nothing in the series has beaten the original game so far, and this game is not even close.
Pros
- 2 randomly triggered bonus features
- Giant symbols and wilds
- Free spins with only giant symbols and stacked symbols of higher value
- 3 different progressive jackpots
Cons
- High volatility and only 1,000x max win potential

Themes inspired by vikings and norse mythology are not exactly hard to come by, and you’ll find plenty of exciting games of a similar nature out there. We have taken the liberty of handpicking a few related games for you, and we think you’ll enjoy these games if you liked the game at hand. We’ll start with the first game in the Age of Gods series, as this is still number one in our view.
Age of the Gods - is based around greek mythology, and you can win 4 different progressive jackpots here. There are also 4 different bonus rounds to enjoy, one for each of the main gods in the game. The volatility is medium, but this is still a fairly volatile game. You can win up to 5,000x your stake, which is a far better potential than the game at hand.
Vikings Go Berzerk - is all about filling up the rage meter and watching the vikings lose their shit and go berzerk. This follow-up game from Vikings Go Wild is filled with exciting bonus features, and you can win up to 4,000x your stake, which is decent for a medium variance game.
Troll Hunters 2 - comes with better visuals than the first game (which was a hit), and you can win up to 5,000x your stake on this highly volatile sequel. The actual features of the game haven’t really changed that much from the original, which means you now have a high risk/reward option if you already enjoyed the first game.
